Gio Ponti - Richard Ginori ceramic dish - Italy
Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti (1891 - 1979) became in 1923 art director for the ceramics
manufacturer Richard-Ginori and the relationship lasted up until 1930.For Richard-Ginori he won the 'grand prix' at the 1925 Paris expo, and turned the company into a role model of industrial design excellence by decorating simple ceramic forms with elegant neo-classical motifs.
Under his artistic direction the link between art and industry was developed and were planned and created ceramic and porcelain objects that found in the decoration of the artist a refined uniqueness and innovation. As an admirer of the Wiener Werkstätte production Gio Ponti created more than a simple decoration and the human figures as well as the chromatic choices express the artist's intentions to create new poetic forms.
This one is a small oval dish of white ceramic with blue border and a couple playing tennis, made by Richard Ginori factory on the typical Gio Ponti's design.
The dish, maybe a small ashtray, was made in Italy around 1930 and has Richard Ginori hallmark on the bottom.
The dish is 4 3/4 in. wide (cm. 12) and was bought by an Italian dealer at an Antique Market.
