silver ember bowl (chofeta, brasero) -SpainThis is a silver ember bowl standing on a couple of dolphins over an embossed base. It has two ebonized wood handles and a pair of unidentified hallmarks. Presumably it was made in Spain in 19th century. Bowls were used by smokers to light their pipes and cigars from hot embers placed on the table without burning it. These devices were called "pipe lighters" or 'smoker's brazier' and in Spanish 'chofeta' and 'brasero' (braserillo). The ember bowl is 11 1/8 in. wide (cm 28) and was bought from a UK dealer through the Internet. This item is not for sale, but most of my pieces were bought through the Internet.
